"Newspaper editing advanced my knowledge of AP style,
the art of editing – rewriting copy, editing for accuracy, fairness and
balance, writing headlines, cropping and sizing photos – and layout skills
using computer software."
I have completed two
design courses at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications –
graphic arts and newspaper editing, both of which had lecture and laboratory
components – so that I could expand my visual perception of messages around
me and my vision of messages worth creating.
Software
I use Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and
Illustrator as a means for my messages to be seen. Course projects varied
from resumes with typographic wordmark, to logos and identity systems, to
poster, brochure and magazine designs. The course changed my visual
awareness of color, type, images and layers of design.
The editing project linked
below incorporated editing, headline writing, layout and decision-making
skills learned throughout the course. I completed this project using Adobe
InDesign and Photoshop.
