Before beginning the Spring 2006 Syracuse University London Program, I
participated in "Auld Reekie: Cultural Studies, Scotland and the Road to
London", an 11-day optional field-studies seminar, taught on site in
Scotland and England. The seminar examines the popular and elite cultural
forms that organize life in Britain. Based in Scotland and Northern England,
the 3-credit pre-semester course emphasizes interaction with local cultures
and environments as students explore contemporary
Scottish/English/British/European identities and discover how and why
identity and attitude depend on where people live. Intensive program
features guest speakers from a broad range of fields, academic and
non-academic texts, investigative exercises, and daily critical and
reflective writing. Enrollment is limited to 25 students.
